Language policy

The Taalloket, a special unit within Taalcentrum-VU, is responsible for developing and implementing VU University Amsterdam language policy. The university's language policy aims to ensure that students, lecturers and other university employees have sufficient language skills to be able to participate fully in education and research.

One of the primary means of accomplishing this goal is a mandatory Dutch test for all first-year students. Students who score poorly will be offered a Dutch language refresher course. Plans are also in place to assess the English language proficiency of lecturers who teach in English. Where necessary, lecturers will be offered additional training to improve their English skills. The Taalloket is also responsible for developing complementary policy with regard to these issues and is an active participant in discussions concerning language policy.
