Language proficiency in higher education

Language proficiency is one of the key factors in predicting academic success. Students who perform well on a language proficiency test at the outset of their studies generally attain more credits in their first year.

Development of language proficiency test for students

Taalcentrum-VU has been involved in implementing VU Amsterdam’s language policy since 2008. We developed a language proficiency test specifically for students in higher education and administer it every year for all first-year students. To maintain relevance, the questions are updated regularly. Dutch and English versions of the test are available.

The Dutch version assesses students’ knowledge of:

  • grammar
  • spelling and punctuation
  • structure
  • vocabulary and usage
  • register

In addition to these topics, the English version also assesses:

  • reading comprehension
  • pronunciation
  • classroom English

Tailored solutions and advice
